Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 14:26:27 GMT

PHOENIX (AP) — Jalen Brunson’s eighth 3-point attempt of the night initially looked a little off the mark, hitting the side of the rim before bouncing around a couple times and finally dropping through. The sixth-year guard was so hot from the field that a shooter’s roll almost seemed unfair. His final 3 got him to 50 points for the night. He also had five steals.“I had no idea,” Brunson said about his perfection from long range. “I was just playing free.”Brunson is the first Knicks player in franchise history to score 50 points while making nine 3s.Phoenix — which lost star guard Bradley Beal to an ankle injury in the first quarter — has dropped six of its last eigh...

Rudy Giuliani must pay $148 million in damages to two former Georgia election workers whose lives were upended after the former New York City mayor falsely accused them of manipulating ballots in 2020, a federal jury determined Friday. The eight-member panel awarded Ruby Freeman and her daughter Shaye Moss about $16 million apiece for claims that Giuliani defamed them, as well as $20 million apiece for the emotional distress they experienced after Giuliani’s allegations were followed by a deluge of threats, harassment and professional consequences. The jury of Washington, D.C., residents also determined that Giuliani must pay $75 million in “punitive” damages, a penalty intended to deter him and others from engaging in similar smear campaigns in the future. The verdict was announced late Friday afternoon, after about 10 hours of deliberations following an unusual four-day trial in which the jury’s only task was to make damage awards, since U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell had ...

Communications blackout and spiraling hunger compound misery in Gaza Strip as war enters 11th week

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — A prolonged communications blackout that severed telephone and internet connections compounded the misery Saturday in the besieged Gaza Strip, where a United Nations agency said hunger levels had spiraled in recent days.Internet and telephone lines went down Thursday evening and were still inaccessible Saturday morning, according to internet access advocacy group NetBlocks.org, hampering aid deliveries and rescue efforts as Israel’s war against Gaza’s ruling militant group Hamas stretched into the 11th week. “The internet blackout is ongoing, and based on our records it is the longest such incident” in the over-two-month war, said Alp Toker, the group’s director. The United Nations’ humanitarian affairs department said communications with Gaza were “severely disrupted” due to damage to telecommunications lines in the south. The offensive, triggered by the unprecedented Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, has flattened much of northern Gaza and driven 8...
