Kaplan explained at length why he believed the California man had repeatedly pushed the boundaries of his $250 million bail package to a point that Kaplan could no longer ensure the protection of the community, including prosecutors’ witnesses, unless the 31-year-old was behind bars.At the conclusion of the hearing, Bankman-Fried took off his suit jacket and tie and turned his watch and other personal belongings over to his lawyers. The clanging of handcuffs could be heard as his hands were cuffed in front of him. He was then led out of the courtroom by U.S. marshals. It was a spectacular fall for a man once viewed by many as a savvy crypto visionary wh...

Nestor Cortes — son of South Florida and Cuba — will have to wait to make his bucket list start in Miami

Nestor Cortes — son of South Florida and Cuba — will have to wait to make his bucket list start in Miami MIAMI — The last time the Yankees visited the Marlins, Nestor Cortes found himself filling an unusual role in a familiar setting.A resident of nearby Hialeah, Florida, Cortes had to pinch-run late in the game with the Yankees’ bench depleted. A left-handed pitcher, Cortes is known for his arm, not his legs. But he gladly made his first major league appearance in his hometown ballpark — even if it left him desiring more.“That was pretty cool,” Cortes told the Daily News of his awkward stumble around the bases in 2021, but he added that it would also be “cool to go back and actually pitch a game there.”Cortes would have gotten his wish on Saturday had he not surprisingly landed on the 15-day injured list on Friday afternoon with a left rotator cuff strain. He had been scheduled to start against the Marlins, the team he grew up rooting for, at LoanDepot Park, before the latest blow in an already injury-ravaged campaign. But he will still see fri...

Ticker: Demand for the new 486-horsepower V-8 Ford Mustang is roaring; Russia is back on the lunar path New versions of the Mustang muscle car will begin shipping next week and more than two thirds of the orders include the big, 5-liter V-8 engine, Ford said Friday.Demand for roaring engines remains strong in an era when Detroit automakers are starting to phase out the rumbling gas burners and transition to electric vehicles in order to meet strict government emissions and fuel economy requirements. There are about 13,000 U.S. orders for the 2024 Mustangs, Ford says, which also can be equipped with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine. Of those orders, 67% have the V-8, and more than a quarter of the people seeking that Mustang want the six-speed manual transmission, spokesman Mike Levine says.Russia is back on the lunar pathA rocket carrying a lunar landing craft blasted off Friday on Russia’s first moon mission in nearly 50 years, racing to land on Earth’s satellite ahead of an Indian spacecraft. The launch from Russia’s Vostochny spaceport in the Far East of the Luna-25 craft to the m...

Lucas: The journalist, the bomb, the truth One wonders how many Americans would be aware of the horrific bombing of Hiroshima were it not for Christopher Nolan’s hit movie “Oppenheimer.”Which recalls philosopher George Santayana’s observation that “those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it.”Robert J. Oppenheimer was the lead scientist involved in the creation of the atomic bomb that was dropped over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, 78 years ago, to get Japan to surrender in World War II.While Oppenheimer never publicly regretted his role in the creation of the bomb, it haunted him for the rest of his life. The results were so devastating that Oppenheimer hoped that such bombs would not be used again.Japan was doomed to defeat following the Battle of Midway June 4-7, 1942, and the bloody and costly U.S. invasion of the stepping stone islands that led to Japan, especially Iwo Jima and Okinawa. As flames swallowed Maui, survivors made harrowing escapes An immigrant cook building a new life. A widow preparing to say goodbye. And a couple taking their vows. All were caught in the crossfire, forced to flee as flames swallowed parts of Maui, that drop in the Pacific where roads wind past waterfalls, turtles glide through gem-blue waters and a volcano towers overhead. These are the stories of the survivors:___By the time Marlon Vasquez heard the alarms, there was only time to run.The 31-year-old cook shouted for his brother and opened the door of their Lahaina rental home to thick smoke and intense heat.“The fire was almost on top of us,” he said. The two sprinted. And, running on for what felt like an eternity, a hellscape unfurled. Day turned to night as smoke blotted out the sun, occasionally bared as a red orb. Roads clogged with cars. People dove into the Pacific. At one point, the flames chased him as strong winds blew them down a mountainside. The air was so black he vomited.“We ran and ran. We ran almost the whole night and into t...
