Massachusetts Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira searched the internet for some of the nation’s worst mass shootings, a new 50-page motion states. Those searches, federal prosecutors say, included the terms: “Ruby Ridge,” “Las Vegas shooting,” “Mandalay Bay shooting,” “Buffalo tops shooting,” and “Uvalde.”He used his government computer, the feds add, to look up those mass casualty tragedies. The motion to keep Teixeira locked up is packed with concerns prosecutors have about the guns he owns, alleged betrayal of documents he vowed to protect and hate-filled comments he made to consider setting him free.“No conditions of release will reasonably assure the Defendant’s appearance, the safety of any person or the community, or the integrity of this proceeding,” U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Rachael Rollins and her team state.GALLERY: Bruins fall in OT

The Bruins’ 4-3 overtime loss to Florida at TD Garden Wednesday night forces a Game 6 in Sunrise, Fla., at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Boston leads the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs first round series 3-2.Hyde5: Tkachuk, the star of this series, keeps Florida Panthers going with dramatic goal in overtime

The Matthew Tkachuk trade keeps getting better and better with each night. His overtime goal in Wednesday’s 4-3 win against Boston in Game 5 didn’t just keep the Florida Panthers season going. It established him even more these playoffs as the face of this franchise moving forward. He’s not only a scorer but an edgy physical presence that has caught Boston’s full attention this series. On a team that doesn’t play as cute as last season but still doesn’t have enough grit, Tkachuk brings the sandpaper personality you hope rubs off on others. He has three goals and three assists this series to lead the team. He also leads in being an instigator against Boston. You know how the Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill was a star who played beyond hopes? Tkachuk is the same idea for the Panthers as they go for the big surprise against Boston.“We were supposed to get swept in this series, right?” he said after his game-winner sent this series bac...Despite OT loss, Patrice Bergeron happy to be back in the playoffs

Patrice Bergeron was a force on the ice is his debut performance in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.Bergeron held nothing back over his 30 shifts, but his presence by itself was not enough to carry the day against the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night at the TD Garden. The Panthers fought off elimination and forced a Game 6 with a 4-3 overtime victory.“It was great to be out there of course, there is nothing like playoff hockey,” said Bergeron. “To be able to contribute on the ice is satisfying and it was awesome to get back.”The Bruins’ captain suffered an undisclosed upper body injury in the season finale at Montreal and missed the first four games against the Panthers.Bergeron skated a full contact practice on Tuesday and was cleared to compete in his 168th playoff game with Boston, second most in team history. Bergeron skated 19:03 minutes, 4:34 on the power play, with six shots on goal.“Obviously I needed a few shifts to get back into the rhythm and obviously getting back into ...Julius Randle sprains ankle again in series-clinching win over Cavs

CLEVELAND — Julius Randle is hurt again. The Knicks All-Star sprained his left ankle in the second quarter of Wednesday’s Game 5 against the Cavaliers, laying on the court in pain as trainers, teammates and even coach Tom Thibodeau gravitated toward Randle with concern.Randle turned the ankle after contesting a shot and landing awkwardly on Cavs guard Caris LeVert with 1:17 remaining in the second quarter. He sprained that same ankle on March 29 and missed the final five games of the regular season. The two-time All-Star didn’t return to the game. Before the injury, Randle was having a rejuvenated performance with 13 points and six assists in 16 minutes. Three nights prior, the 28-year-old struggled in Game 4 — which included his shaky effort on defense — and was benched for the entire fourth quarter.Thibodeau was hopeful that two days off between games would provide Randle a needed refresher. Asked if he expected Randle to bounce back in Game 5, the coach...Rules of the Road: Are tinted windows legal in California?

SAN DIEGO (KSWB) -- Window tinting is popular among many drivers. But what's legal and what's not in California?"The purpose of having the window tint law is basically, you don't drive at night with your sunglasses on, and that's essentially what you're doing with 40% of your vision," California Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Pennings told FOX 5 Wednesday.Pennings says tinted windows have been a factor in collisions due to drivers being unable to see out of their vehicles. Is a front license plate required in California? "It's a safety issue, and lawmakers in California have decided to keep this law on our books," Pennings added.Rear windowsDrivers can tint their rear windows as long as their vehicle has two side mirrors, not including the rearview mirror, Pennings said. Front windowsWhen it comes to front windows, California law states drivers must have 70% transparency, meaning they can have 30% tint, Pennings said. ‘Brake checking’ a tailgater: Is it legal in California? SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco is repealing a ban on city-funded travel to 30 states that it says restrict abortion, voting and LGBTQ rights after determining the boycott is doing more harm than good. The Board of Supervisors voted 7-4 on Tuesday to repeal a section of the city’s administrative code that prohibits staff from visiting and city departments from contracting with companies headquartered in the states, which include Texas, Florida and Ohio. California, meanwhile, is considering the repeal of a similar law.City supervisors will hold a second and final vote next Tuesday. Mayor London Breed is expected to sign the measure. The progressive city passed the boycott in 2016, after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. At first, the boycott applied only to states that it considered restricted the rights of LGBTQ people. Later, the list was expanded to include states that limit access to voting and abortion. The idea was to exert economic pressure ...US envoy to head to Brazil following up on high-level talks

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield is heading to Brazil next week, following up on recent high-level meetings between the presidents and top diplomats of the two countries. The U.S. Mission to the United Nations said late Wednesday that she will visit the capital, Brasilia, and then travel to Salvador, one of the oldest cities in the Americas and a center of Afro-Brazilian culture, from May 2-4.Thomas-Greenfield’s visit follows February’s White House meeting where President Joe Biden and Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stressed the importance of defending democracy and preserving the Amazon rain forest — and talks on the margin of the Group of 20 ministerial meeting in New Delhi in early March between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.Lula has also reached out to China and Russia, traveling to Beijing earlier this month to meet with China’s President Xi Jinping in Beijing and holding talks with R...TDSB unanimously passes motion to create anti-Islamophobia strategy

The Toronto District School Board has voted unanimously to implement an anti-Islamophobic strategy after a number of students and parents expressed concerns. In the motion that was put forth, trustees noted that hate crimes against members of the Muslim community have been on the rise in Canada and have had a significant impact on students who identify as Muslim, not only in TDSB schools but in the broader community. “This new strategy will set an example of targeted universalism as we recognize everyone benefits from TDSB’s target removal of systemic barriers faced by the most disadvantaged communities,” said Liban Hassan, the trustee who brought the motion before the board. “Reducing these barriers and disparities leads to a better education system for all TDSB students.”Trustees who spoke in favour of the motion noted there were still hurdles to overcome in the broader community at large. “Islamophobia is not just experienced in our schools, bu...Race to the top (of the class): How NASCAR is inspiring students' interest in science & engineering

CHICAGO — Stock cars will roll into town for NASCAR’s first-ever “street race” this summer. But before the drivers arrive, NASCAR engineers and technicians have been visiting the city to work with Chicago Public School students on a project designed to get them thinking about the science of the sport.“This project was a partnership with NASCAR and the STEM department and the students were asked to build a helmet that was innovative and kept drivers safe,” said Ariana Schachne, the fifth-grade STEM teacher at Armour Elementary School in Bridgeport. CPS’s STEM and STEAM programs involve 22,000 students across 43 schools in the district. The students are now engaged in the civic conversation ahead of one of this summer’s biggest events: NASCAR’s first-ever street race. “We’re learning that a helmet should have proper edging where the bottom half doesn’t cover up the face,” said Daniel Baptiste, a 5th-grade STEM student. “You can see through it and it protects the he...Latest news
