Outgoing Boston City Council President Ed Flynn defended his father’s “record on race relations” in the wake of criticism that’s been leveled at former Mayor Ray Flynn as part of a new documentary recounting the 1989 Stuart murder.Flynn said that while he hasn’t seen the documentary, a collaboration between HBO and the Boston Globe released earlier this month, he is aware of what he described as his father’s past positive leadership on racial justice issues.“He tried to bring the city together, especially during difficult and challenging times in Boston,” Flynn told the Herald, of his 84-year-old father. “I’m proud of his record on race relations.”Ray Flynn, who was mayor from 1984-93, is praised early on in the three-part series for helping to heal a city mired in what his former chief mayoral advisor Neil Sullivan describes on camera as the “persistent racial violence” that continued years after Boston’s “desegregation controversy.”Sullivan points to an instance where the former m...Jayson Tatum among several key Celtics out for game against Raptors

It’s been difficult over recent years for the Celtics to make Jayson Tatum sit out games. But in the case of his ailing left ankle, it was time to take a night off.Tatum, a night after scoring 31 points in the Celtics’ overtime win over the Pistons, sat out Friday night’s game against the Raptors as he continues to manage the left ankle. He sprained it in the first quarter of the Celtics’ road trip-opening game against the Warriors and missed their win over the Kings due to the injury. It was only Tatum’s second missed game of the season, but the Celtics, of course, are looking at the big picture.“I think just understanding when the time is time when you have to give something a rest, and sometimes it can do more harm than good,” C’s coach Joe Mazzulla said. “So kind of just understanding that, and just trusting, like you said, that long mindset, long game mentality.”Tatum was one of several key Celtics out on Friday. An Idaho judge on Friday denied a request by the state’s top legal chief to throw out a lawsuit seeking to clarify the exemptions tucked inside the state’s broad abortion ban.Instead, 4th District Judge Jason Scott narrowed the case to focus only on the circumstances where an abortion would be allowed and whether abortion care in emergency situations applies to Idaho’s state constitutional right to enjoy and defend life and the right to secure safety.Scott’s decision comes just two weeks after a hearing where Idaho’s Attorney General Raul Labrador’s office attempted to dismiss the case spearheaded by four women and several physicians, who filed the case earlier this year. Similar lawsuits are playing out around the nation, with some of them, like Idaho’s, brought by the Center for Reproductive Rights on behalf of doctors and pregnant people who were denied access to abortions while facing serious pregnancy complications.According to the Center for...Afghan refugee in Oregon training flight crash that killed 3 ignored instructor’s advice, NTSB says

NEW YORK (AP) — A second trial of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried on charges not in the cryptocurrency fraud case presented to a jury that convicted him in November is not necessary, prosecutors told a judge Friday.Prosecutors told U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan in a letter that evidence at a second trial would duplicate evidence already shown to a jury. They also said it would ignore the “strong public interest in a prompt resolution” of the case, particularly because victims would not benefit from forfeiture or restitution orders if sentencing is delayed. They said the judge can consider the evidence that would be used at a second trial when he sentences Bankman-Fried on March 28 for defrauding customers and investors of at least $10 billion.Bankman-Fried, 31, who has been incarcerated since several weeks before his trial, was convicted in early November of seven counts, including wire fraud, wire fraud conspiracy and three conspiracy charges. He could face decades in prison.Las...Oakland officer killed while answering burglary call; shooter being sought, police say
